More Green Than You Think: Exploring Pflugerville's Parks and Trails
Now, if you’re a local to the Austin area, pairing Pflugerville and trails may not be the first thing that comes to mind. Trust me, it wasn’t for me either until I stepped foot into the area. Pflugerville calls itself the “trail capital of Texas” with over 56 miles of trails (just within its city limits). You read that right.
According to Pflugerville Parks and Recreation, “94.8% of residents have direct trail access within 0.5 miles of home.”
If you’ve exhausted a lot of the more popular spots around the Austin area, let me grab your hand and lead you to Pflugerville for the weekend. If you love biking, hiking, walking, fishing, taking the kiddos out to playgrounds, or bird watching, you will not be disappointed. The hard part is choosing where to start.
Let me break it all down for you.
Pflugerville Parks & Trails
This isn’t every park and trail in the area, just the main ones to start exploring!
Pfluger Park: A paved trail that winds alongside a stream with footbridges and a surprise goat farm visible along the end of the route (bring a quarter for the feeders). Low-key, walkable, and a solid choice for anyone who wants nature without effort. There is a good amount of parking, and it’s close to downtown Pflugerville.
Bohls Park: The creek here is stocked with catfish, cichlids, turtles, and yes, the occasional water snake. The trail connects to a wider path system. Honest note: you'll hear traffic, but there's something about spotting a softshell turtle that makes it worth it.
Stoney Creek Park: Disc golf, a dog park, and walking trails make this one for the return visitor. The wooded creek corridor adds character. Good for a half-day if you mix in the different amenities.
Northeast Metro Park Trail: About 2.5 miles round-trip with genuine shade, sounds of a nearby creek, and local wildlife sightings - bunnies, turtles, and snakes have all been reported. There are a lot of sports fields and even a BMX track!
Wilbarger Creek Park: This park has accessible trail entrances and a connection to Mirror Lake Park a quarter-mile away. It’s great for families with young kids or anyone who wants a relaxed outing.
Lake Pflugerville Park: The 3-mile loop around the lake is beginner-friendly and dog-friendly, with a small sandy beach, kayak/canoe rentals, and fishing piers. Great for a full morning outing. Best tip: go early on weekends because it fills up.
